Mens B Chase Promotion
Away to Relegated Wymondham dell the Mens B needed to find a win to keep away from relegation. John Marshall, Peter Cator, Paul Webb and a Denis Goodley scored a 4 on the 6th followed by a 5 and were 15-5 up on ten now completely in charge and all four playing well went on to win 30-14. Johnstone Mackie, Arthur Jolliffe , Alan Benson-Nutt and Barney Wymer dropped a 5 on 3rd and were 3-9 down but a 4 , then a 5 put the 15-10 up at 11 ends and from here took charge winning 23-15. Ian Anderson, Dennis Edwards, Bill Downie and Brian Grint went 1- 12 down after 5 ends but a 4 on the 10th made it 11-12, by 16 ends it was 15-19, but a removed shot bowl on the 17th for a 4 put them back level as they went on to win 23-21. Ian Wilson, Will Jeffries, John Harris and Wyn Willimott picked up a 5 on the 2nd end and were 13-3 up at 8 ends but stuck there and were 13-14 down at 13, 18 each at 18 and then scored 2 shots on the final end to draw 20-20.
This result puts them in contention for promotion back to division one at the first attempt, with 5 teams within 1 point of each other. Acle B entertain County Arts B next sat. with Browston A v Pentney and Shotford v Woodlands.
Result 96 – 70 and 6 ½ – ½ pts
So So Close for C Team
Away to Browston the Mens C Team needed six points to win the League but it was going to be difficult on the blue carpet. Richard Hayton, Derrick Willgress, Brian Hearn and Mick Askham went 12-4 up at 10 ends and 19-6 at 15, were unfortunate to drop a 6 on the 18th but won 26-14. Richard Pope, Peter Evans, David Crosby and John Lettice went 10-5 up at 10 and 14-9 at 15, dropped a 4 on the 19th but 2 shots on the final end gave them victory 19-16. Alan Kendalls rink scored a 6 on the 2nd end, but by 10ends were 10 each, were 14-18 at 15 and and in a close finish lost 22-24. Alan Jones rink were 5-13 down at 10 ends and 7-23 at 15 bounced back but lost 16-27.
Result 83 – 81 and 5 – 2 pts A disappointing result after a brilliant season and only 3 shots in it to have won the league.
Mens A Close in on Championship
With Beccles losing on the last bowl of their match with Lynn Sport, the A Team gave themselves a chance of winning the league with a 7-0 win at home to Wymondham Dell. Norfolk Bowling Club beat County Arts and are likely to take the league if Acle slip up away to County Arts next Saturday.
Matty Sparrow, Danny Mills, Daniel Noble and Ian Wones won 19-12 against the rink skipped by Roger Guy. Acle trailing 6-2 at 6 ends scored a four to bring the teams level. Trading blows over the next 8 ends the score was 12-10 to Acle but a single and five in the next two ends all but sealed the win.
David Cole, Ivan Borrett, Tony Dunton and Danny Ramsbottom won 28-16. Four one down at three ends they scored a five to take the lead. Dropping a five on the eighth and four on the tenth put Wymondham 14-10 at ten ends. An excellent second half of the game saw Acle win 8 of the last 9 ends for a comfortable win.
Mark Elliott, Roy Himpleman, Graham Punchard and Jamie Howlett won 19-17 against Gary Goodrums rink. Two fours in the first five ends saw them leading 9-3 at five ends. With ones scored on the next 8 ends the score was 13-7 in Acle’s favour. Although they stretched their lead to 19-10 at 18 ends, Wymondham made a spirited fight back to score 3,2,2 on the last three ends.
Jim Fruin, John Sparrow, Simon Elliott and George Tubby win 30-15 against the rink skipped by Gary Oakley. 3-2 down at five ends Acle scored a 2,3,4 and 5 over the next 5 ends to lead 16-4 at ten ends. Although they dropped a five on the thirteenth end they scored three threes and a two in the second half of the game to run out comfortable winners.
Six points next week at County Arts will see Acle win the league, anything less will bring Norfolk Bowling Club into the mix.
